Allee der Kosmonauten was both the breakthrough and the cornerstone of Sasha Waltz’s rapid rise to fame. Choreographed by the young hopeful from the Spree-side capital, Allee der Kosmonauten is the impudent dance of mundane life in East Berlin’s prefab high-rises that garnered Waltz the position of artistic director of the Berliner Schaubühne.
With humour and a good eye for the grotesque features of mundane life, Waltz, together with a young and suitable ensemble, debunked the rose-tinted romanticisation of the East German “blossoming landscapes”. Her “Pas de deux am Kanapee” [Sofa-side pas de deux] was the new discovery at the 1997 Theatre Meet and was a celebrated guest at theatres around the world.
